My grandmother, Lorene Drywater, is a Cherokee Native Artist and her creations have been in numerous books and magazines. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution, and she has been declared a National Treasure by the Cherokee Nation. Along with making traditional Cherokee dresses and ribbon shirts, she also makes the buffalo grass dolls pictured above. The process of making these dolls is arduous – she gathers the grass and dries it herself, sewing everything by hand – and the results are exquisite.
